The main objective of the Red Bull Ring Classics photo work was to capture speed. Need for speed, speed of the most classic cars, EVER. For me, this wasn’t just another photo job. The goal was simple but not easy. I was asked to capture the classic racing in a way that shows the raw speed, rivalry, and the emotions of the people who came to enjoy the event.
We always go extra mile, and this project was no exception especially when I had a chance to combine two passions, photography and motorsport. I wanted to be fast, in such photo work speed is everything. I choosed two cameras and two lenses. First was ultra-wide zoom lens. With this lens I wanted to show the big picture of the event, the Red Bull Ring with its sweeping curves, the Styrian mountains in the background - establishing shots, and of course the pit lane full of action. On the other hand, with short to medium telephoto zoom lens, I went looking for the tighter shoots and of course emotions of a driver’s face before the start. Fans leaning over the barriers with a smile on their faces. I moved around a lot during the event at only 2 corners and the paddock so I could see the races from every angle. I captured the speed and emotions, both drivers and spectators. What nostalgia and adrenaline :)
The effect of the photos was set clear. You need to feel the need for speed, hear the loud engines, and smell the burned petrol and tired in the first corner. The wide shots establish the location of the Red Bull Ring, while the close-up shots take you closer to the drivers and the track. Photos must communicate must tell stories, show cars on a circuit show passion, show history. Show people who love motorsport as much as I do.
The end result is a documentation of this motorsport event. Thanks to Veteran SK and vintagedistrict.sk editor-in-chief Samuel Vanko I was fortunate to attend this event, so I could deliver him images to share with fans and promote future races. This project reminded me why I love doing this. Every time I press the shutter button at an event like this, hearing the classic cars downshifting in first corner, I feel like a kid again. Reminds of my father who took on such motorsport events when I was small kiddo.
